What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 inspection?
A Level 1 covers the readily accessible parts of the chimney and is right for a chimney in regular use with no changes. A Level 2 adds a camera scan of the whole flue and is required when a home is sold, the fuel or appliance changes, or after a chimney fire or other damage.
Do I need a chimney inspection when buying a house in Bergen County?
It is strongly recommended. NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection on a property transfer, and a general home inspector does not scan the inside of the flue.
Do you inspect gas fireplaces and furnace flues?
Yes. Gas and oil flues still need yearly inspection because their exhaust is wet and corrosive, and blocked flues can push carbon monoxide into the house.
